POSTPONED: Workshop - National Surgical Obstetrical & Anaesthesia Planning (Nepal)
NOTE: Due to the spread of the Covid-19 virus, this workshop has been postponed until further notice. News will be posted here and communicated directly to all that have signed up for the workshop.
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), the Global Surgery Foundation (GSF) and the Nepal Ministry of Health and Population will organize a high-level government workshop on National Surgical Obstetrical and Anaesthesia Planning (NSOAP) in Kathmandu on 11-12 March 2020.
Poor access to safe and affordable, emergency and essential surgical services remains a significant problem in Nepal and worldwide. Approximately 30% of the global burden of disease is caused by conditions that can be treated by surgery or require the direct care of a surgeon. Despite this, up to 90% of the world’s poor do not have access to safe surgical care. Similar data has been shown in Nepal, particularly in the more remote regions of the country. The Nepal Ministry of Health and Population has made this need a top priority as they work towards Universal Health Coverage.
In response, the outcome of this workshop will be the initiation of the planning process for building capacity in surgical, obstetrical and anaesthesia care in Nepal for the next 10 years towards 2030. The workshop content will cover a focused array of health care planning topics in the area of surgery, and importantly, innovative and sustainable financing solutions including the Ministry of Finance, Planning Commission and external funding agencies.
Nepal’s surgical planning process and capacity building will have significant impact on key targets for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including maternal and child mortality, gender equality and poverty reduction. The organizers are looking forward to to seeing the outcome of this meeting as a clear pathway towards a comprehensive and integrated plan for providing surgical, obstetrics and anaesthesia care for the people of Nepal.
