SURGhub Brings Digital Surgical Training to West Africa

SURGhub project manager, Ms. Francesca Vitucci, presenting to delegates at the 64th WACS conference in Sierra Leone.

From March 4th to 7th, 2024, the SURGhub team participated in the 64th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the West Africa College of Surgeons (WACS) in Freetown, Sierra Leone. SURGhub was represented by Francesca Vitucci from the Global Surgery Foundation, Léa Simon from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and Eric O’Flynn from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

SURGhub was prominently represented at the WACS conference through three main activities:

  • The team presented an abstract entitled “The United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub: Innovation in Digital Surgery Education”.

  • SURGhub was showcased at a special Symposium about “Innovation in Digital Surgical Education”. The presentation highlighted the role of SURGhub in bridging the training gaps in West Africa.

  • A dedicated SURGhub booth welcomed partners and potential users. This offered the team an opportunity to engage with key stakeholders interested in hosting their educational materials on SURGhub and to hear direct feedback from users.

The success and impact of SURGhub at the WACS 64th Annual Conference underscores the platform’s significance as a transformative tool in surgical education and training.

SURGhub’s growth has been testament to the critical gap it fills in surgical training

During the conference week, 253 healthcare workers visited the platform for the first time, 164 of them joined the SURGhub community and 72 downloaded the mobile app on Android or iOS.

The success and impact of SURGhub at the WACS 64th Annual Conference underscores the platform's significance as a transformative tool in surgical education and training. SURGhub not only addresses critical gaps in medical education but also fosters collaboration, innovation, and equitable access to knowledge worldwide. The platform's ability to attract diverse stakeholders, facilitate meaningful partnerships, and adapt to evolving healthcare needs positions it as a cornerstone in the advancement of surgical care globally.
