SURGhub Shortlisted for Prestigious 2024 THE Awards
SURGhub, the United Nations Global Surgery Learning Hub, has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2024 Times Higher Education Awards in the “Technological or Digital Innovation of the Year” category. This recognition underscores SURGhub's significant impact on improving surgical care in low-resource settings.
A collaborative initiative between the United Nations Institute of Training and Research (UNITAR), the Global Surgery Foundation, and RCSI's Institute of Global Surgery, SURGhub provides frontline healthcare workers in low-income countries with access to high-quality, context-appropriate training materials. By addressing the critical shortage of surgical professionals, SURGhub is helping to save millions of lives worldwide.
Since its launch in June 2023, SURGhub has attracted over 7,000 learners from 170 countries, with 71% coming from low- or middle-income nations. The platform's innovative open-access design, coupled with its user-friendly features, has made it a valuable resource for healthcare professionals in even the most challenging environments.
One of SURGhub's key strengths is its highly participatory approach. Led by volunteer clinicians, nurses, educators, and technologists from around the globe, the project benefits from a diverse range of expertise and perspectives. With funding from the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, SURGhub offers free content from various academic and professional organizations, which is reviewed by over 100 global volunteer experts.
The Times Higher Education Awards, often referred to as the "Oscars of higher education," celebrate excellence across a wide range of university activities, including leadership, management, administration, and academia. Being shortlisted for such a prestigious award is a testament to SURGhub's groundbreaking work and its potential to revolutionize surgical training worldwide.
