Bringing Breast Cancer Patient Perspectives from Türkiye to the ICHOM Conference
The GSF team presented on how patient- and provider-reported data can improve access to surgical care for breast cancer patients.
From 21 – 22nd October 2024, the GSF’s Women’s Health team participated in the ICHOM conference, the world’s leading value-based healthcare (VBHC) conference which took place in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The conference brought together over 650 attendees from 45 countries to learn about the latest advancements in VBHC, across a variety of different disciplines and practice areas.
Value-based healthcare (VBHC) is an approach which centres on maximising value for the patients while optimising use of resources. VBHC focuses on doing more of what brings value to the patient, utilising innovative data systems and teams-based approaches.
The GSF, in collaboration with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), through the VBHC Programme, is working on two projects in Rwanda and Türkiye.
These projects focus on implementing VBHC approaches to improve access to surgical care for breast cancer patients through the collection of patient- and provider-reported data.
The abstract ‘Leveraging value-based healthcare (VBHC) to optimize patient access and experience in breast cancer pathways’ submitted by the GSF and UNITAR, highlights preliminary data collected from the projects in Türkiye.
The abstract was selected for oral presentation in the ICHOM conference’s Abstract Gallery Exhibition under the theme of Patient Engagement and Shared Decision Making. It showcased both patient and provider perspectives linked to diagnostic and treatment delays for breast cancer.
The VBHC Programme, which concluded the needs assessments phase in November, reached 1,415 women and breast cancer patients and 169 healthcare workers across 43 health centres in 7 regions of Türkiye through surveys, interviews, and focus-group discussions.
The ICHOM conference enabled the team to engage in open dialogue on how to create a framework for change and discuss how the VBHC approach can help solve major global health challenges, including access to surgical care. Lastly, the team was able to develop new partnerships for future collaboration.
As the GSF advances in its mission to strengthen surgical care systems, integrating VBHC as a cross-cutting approach can help to achieve impact on patient care.
