The Global Surgery Foundation announces Shudufhadzo Musida as Goodwill Ambassador
Miss South Africa 2020, Shudufhadzo Musida, appointed as GSF Goodwill Ambassador
Geneva, Switzerland, 29 July 2022 — The Global Surgery Foundation proudly announces appointment of Ms. Shudufhadzo Musida to the role as Goodwill Ambassador.
Already working alongside various global initiatives such as Global Citizen, United Nations-Women Forum, and important causes within Africa, Ms. Musida now lends her voice to The Global Surgery Foundation (The GSF). Coming from a province in South Africa that is largely rural - and often referred to as ‘the Land of Legend' due to its natural beauty - ignited her passion to advocate for education and economic empowerment, especially for women and children. Ms. Musida has used her platform as a model, author, and public speaker to destigmatize health matters and shed light on causes that matter to her most.
‘The influence of mental health on postoperative surgical outcomes has often been neglected, even though medical research published as of 2020 has shown that patients with preoperative mental illness such as anxiety or depression had a higher chance of surgical complications.
How are surgeons expected to optimise mental health assessments and services to improve outcomes for vulnerable populations when presently, there is no coordinated research or funding strategy to support the development of comprehensive surgical care system in low and middle income countries. This makes it difficult for countries like my own to meaningfully contribute towards Universal Health Coverage and other health related objectives outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goals. I believe in ensuring that everyone should have access to the surgical care they need, no matter where they live. It is for this reason that I lend my voice to the mission of The GSF, to highlight these disparities and the urgent need to upscale access to safe and affordable surgical care.’
- Shudufhadzo Musida
In her role as Goodwill Ambassador, Ms. Musida will use various global platforms and entities like her foundation Shudufhadzo Foundation-NPC to help raise awareness for maternal health and paediatric surgery. Drawing on her advocacy experience on the African continent, she hopes to expand awareness and mobilise support to increase access to surgery within Africa.
The GSF is an international initiative which aims to increase and improve equitable access to safe, quality, timely, and affordable surgical, obstetric, and anaesthesia care, especially in low and middle income countries. The GSF serves as a common platform for all stakeholders to upscale activities to strengthen surgical systems. You can learn more about The GSF programs here.
